Crossing Hokkaido

My second tour from Tomakomai to Cape Soya in Hokkaido

My second tour from Tomakomai to Cape Soya in Hokkaido

My second bike tour, and the first tour using my Surley Disc Trucker.

This trip started in Mito, biking to the coast and catching the MOL Sunflower. The ferry journey is about 20 hours to Tomakomai, and is mostly used by trucks to cross between islands. Almost nobody was on the ferry, and the truckers stay in different quarters to other travelers; so it was quite a surreal experience.

An unusual experience on this trip was to camp in Horokanai which has a beautiful looking camp site beside a reservoir. Unfortunately when we camped there we found that the reservoir had been drained for maintenance creating quite a creepy atmosphere. The mosquitos here were unbelievable; forcing us to cook dinner in a toilet block!

Unfortunately I didnt have a Garmin at the time, so I dont have a map of the journey.

The best I’ve got is this screenshot from my iPhone showing me at the top of Japan.
